Detailed consultation and physical examination
Assessment of breathing, nasal septum, cartilage and skin thickness
Discussion of your goals and what is realistically achievable
Review of medical history, medications and allergies
Preoperative tests such as blood work and, if needed, imaging
In some cases, 2D or 3D simulations may be used to help visualize possible changes
Admission to hospital and final checks
Meeting the anesthesiologist and your surgeon again
Marking and reviewing the plan
General anesthesia is administered so you sleep comfortably
The surgeon performs the planned reshaping, correcting bone and cartilage and addressing the septum if needed
Internal sutures are placed and a nasal splint and, when needed, soft silicone splints or tampons are applied
You are taken to recovery, then to your room for an overnight stay
Healing after rhinoplasty is a process, and patience is necessary. A typical course:
Swelling and bruising around the eyes and nose are most visible
Mild to moderate discomfort, controlled with pain medications
Keeping the head elevated and applying cold compresses helps reduce swelling
You breathe mainly through your mouth if internal splints are present
External splint and internal silicone splints (if used) are usually removed around day 6 to 7
Bruising begins to fade significantly
Most patients feel comfortable walking and doing light daily activities
You should avoid blowing your nose and avoid any impact or pressure
Bruising typically disappears
Swelling continues to decrease, especially at the upper part of the nose
Many patients return to office work or studies within 7 to 10 days
Light exercise like walking can be resumed, but avoid heavy lifting, contact sports and swimming
Swelling reduces further, and the nose looks more defined
Numbness at the tip or tightness sensation gradually improves
You can usually return to more intense physical activity, according to your surgeon’s advice
Final shape of the nose becomes visible
Subtle refinements of the tip and bridge continue as tissues settle
Scars, if any, are usually faint and difficult to notice
Seek medical advice urgently if you experience:
Sudden strong pain or swelling on one side of the nose
High fever and chills
Persistent heavy bleeding
Severe headache with visual changes
Any trauma to the nose in the early healing period
You may be a good candidate for rhinoplasty if:
You are unhappy with the shape or size of your nose
For example, a prominent hump, wide bridge, drooping or bulbous tip, or asymmetry.
Your nose does not fit the rest of your facial features
You feel that your nose is too large, too small or out of balance with your chin, lips or forehead.
You have breathing problems related to nasal structure
Such as a deviated septum or internal valve collapse, which can be addressed during septorhinoplasty.
You are physically healthy and a non-smoker or willing to stop
Good general health and no uncontrolled medical conditions are important for safe anaesthesia and healing.
Your facial growth is complete
Generally from late teens onwards (your surgeon will confirm if timing is appropriate for you).
You have realistic expectations
You understand that rhinoplasty can improve the shape and function of the nose but cannot create a “perfect” nose or copy someone else’s face.
Rhinoplasty may not be suitable if you have significant untreated health problems, unrealistic expectations or are unable to follow postoperative instructions. During your online assessment and consultation, your surgeon will discuss whether rhinoplasty is appropriate in your specific case.
Your surgeon chooses the most appropriate technique after examining your nose and discussing your goals. Common approaches include:
Small incision across the columella (the strip of skin between the nostrils) plus internal incisions
Provides full visibility of nasal structures
Preferred for complex cases, major tip work, crooked noses, revisions and when precise structural changes are needed
The small external scar usually fades very well over time
All incisions are inside the nostrils
No visible external scar
Suitable for selected cases with limited modifications
Slightly shorter operative time and recovery in some patients
Uses special ultrasonic instruments to sculpt nasal bones more gently
Can reduce trauma to surrounding tissues
Often associated with less swelling and bruising and more precise bone shaping
Usually combined with open or closed approaches
Corrects the nasal septum (the internal wall) together with the external shape
Aims to improve both breathing and appearance in one procedure
Focuses only on reshaping the tip of the nose
Does not involve the nasal bones
Recovery is usually faster and bruising is minimal
Your surgical plan may combine several of these approaches to achieve both natural appearance and better breathing.
Rhinoplasty can help with both aesthetic and functional issues, such as:
Reducing a nasal hump
Narrowing a wide nose or nostrils
Refining a bulbous or droopy tip
Straightening a crooked nose after trauma or natural deviation
Improving nasal symmetry
Correcting cartilage and bone that block airflow
Improving overall facial balance by adjusting the nose to match the chin, lips and forehead
In many cases, functional problems such as difficulty breathing are corrected in the same operation (septorhinoplasty).
Every surgical procedure carries risks. Serious complications are rare when rhinoplasty is performed by an experienced surgeon in a modern hospital, but it is important to be aware of potential issues.
Possible risks and complications include:
Bleeding and infection
These are uncommon but can occur after any surgery. You will receive instructions on how to reduce these risks.
Bruising and swelling
Swelling and bruising around the eyes and nose are expected and usually improve significantly in the first 2–3 weeks.
Asymmetry or irregularities in the nasal shape
Small asymmetries are common, as no face is perfectly symmetrical. In some cases a secondary (revision) procedure may be considered later.
Changes in breathing
Breathing usually improves when functional problems are corrected, but temporary nasal congestion is normal after surgery.
Altered sensation
Numbness or altered sensation around the tip or upper lip can occur and typically improves with time.
Anaesthesia-related risks
General anaesthesia is very safe in modern hospitals, but your anaesthesiologist will review your medical history and discuss any individual risks.
Before your operation, your surgeon will explain which risks are most relevant in your case and what is done to minimise them. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss any concerns.
Some patients come to Istanbul after one or more previous nose surgeries performed elsewhere and are unhappy with the result or still have breathing problems. Revision rhinoplasty is more complex than primary rhinoplasty, because:
The anatomy has been changed by previous surgery
Cartilage support may be weakened and may require grafts
Scar tissue inside the nose can make the procedure more demanding
Healing is often slower, and final results can take longer to appear
We perform revision rhinoplasty in selected cases after a careful evaluation of:
Your current nasal structure and function
Available cartilage from the septum, ear or rib if needed
The quality of your skin and soft tissues
Your expectations and what is realistically achievable
If you have already had a nose job and are considering revision surgery, we recommend you visit our dedicated page for more detailed information:

Most patients should plan 6 to 7 days in Istanbul, to complete surgery, early checks, and splint removal timing (your exact plan depends on technique).
If breathing issues are caused by septum deviation or internal valve collapse, they can often be addressed in the same operation (septorhinoplasty).
Most swelling improves in the first weeks, but refinement continues for 6 to 12 months.
Depending on your goals, you may also want to review:
For patients who have had a prior nose surgery and need correction of function, shape, or both.
Often requested when patients want a more rested eye area along with improved facial harmony.
Relevant when the main concern is facial sagging and jawline definition, rather than only nasal shape.
